In a sentence

MACRO by Discernable is a $20, no-subscription calorie and macro tracker that the founder of Australian media studio Discernable built for himself after the subscription app he was paying for kept ignoring him.

The short version

MACRO by Discernable is a simple calorie and macro tracker built by one person for himself. Fed up with paying monthly for a big-name app that ignored him, he built his own: one-tap logging, 12,000+ Australian foods and smart Insights that run on your phone. It costs $20 once. There's no account, no ads and no AI inside.

The story

The man behind Discernable spent a lifetime as the fat kid, peaking at 149.9 kg (330 lb). His body, he says, never wanted to be that size.

Change didn't come from a diet. It came from dealing with the past: trauma work, therapy and what he calls a full identity excavation. His tastes changed, and the weight melted away. Today he's about 93 kg (205 lb). "I cleared the emotional crap and the trauma," he says, "and my body did the rest."

He tracked every day while it happened, using a big-name calorie app he paid for monthly. It ignored him. It felt, in his words, like a dietitian wrote it, built to put people on a diet rather than help them become someone new. So in 2025 he built his own, laid out exactly the way he wanted, and used it every day.

That app is MACRO by Discernable. There's no company behind it, no dev team and no focus groups: just one person who still opens it every day and fixes whatever bugs him. It costs $20 once, for life.

Story angles

The man who built his own calorie app

A lifetime as the fat kid (149.9 kg at his heaviest), trauma work, an identity overhaul, and a tracker he built because the paid app ignored him.

$20 once vs. $100 a year

Subscription fatigue: a one-person app that refuses to charge a monthly fee.

No AI inside, on purpose

In a market racing to add AI, an app that keeps your food diary on your phone and leaves AI optional.

One maker, one user, every day

No dev team or focus groups. The person who built it uses it daily and fixes what annoys him.
